The Difference Between Hydrogen Peroxide and Carbamide Peroxide Teeth Whitening

The majority of teeth whitening products on the market today use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as their main active ingredient. The active ingredient is the part of the product that is actually whitening your teeth. There isn’t a huge difference between the two chemicals, in fact, they are practically identical. Carbamide peroxide is simply hydrogen peroxide with urea added to it. When carbamide peroxide is added to water, it gives off hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide in its pure form is quite to whiten your teeth but has drawbacks. This chemical can be harmful if not used properly, especially at higher concentrations. Dentists that perform teeth whitening treatments usually use hydrogen peroxide solutions. It is best to only use hydrogen peroxide if you are trained professional or a dentist. This is particularly true if the concentration of hydrogen peroxide is above 10%.

Carbamide peroxide teeth whitening kits are often listed with concentrations well above 10%, however this does not mean that they are dangerous. This concentration of carbamide peroxide to hydrogen peroxide is 3 to 1. This means that for every three molecules of carbamide peroxide, you end up with one molecule of hydrogen peroxide. This means that a carbamide peroxide concentration of 44% is really a hydrogen peroxide concentration of only about 15%.

It takes 15 to 30 minutes for carbamide peroxide to fully break down into hydrogen peroxide. This may take longer than a hydrogen peroxide treatment, however, since the hydrogen peroxide is slowly released, there is a lower chance of irritation. When you use hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient is applied all it once and can greatly increase the risk of chemical burns and irritation. It should be noted that both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are safe for home use. The only danger is posed is if the user doesn’t follow the directions with the product or ingests a much large quantity than what was used for the treatment.
